Friday Five

A quick Friday five before my Caribbean getaway!

1. The wino spent 24 hours in this adorable New York town, and now I want to go, too. Such is life.

2. As usual, Jessica slays in the food gift department. I cannot wait to make these for Christmas gifts!

3. Even though I’m a local, I don’t have all of the best Napa Valley happy hours memorized. I tend to stick to the ones I know! I’m forever grateful for this updated Napa Valley happy hour list, which makes all of our lives a little easier.

4. I cannot even get over these muffins. I need them all in my life right. now.

5. Christina went to this charming Tennessee town and now I am figuring out how I can go. Great walking, Southern charm, and a foodie haven!? Count me in.

Friday Five

Happy Friday! And happy May! It’s gonna be Mayyyy. Sorry. I had to. How are you celebrating this Friday?

Dallas margaritas kept me busy on my layover!

1. Yesterday, I jetted off to Tennessee. I flew by way of a margarita-fueled layover in Dallas into Memphis. I’m quite excited to visit family, spend some time cooking with my cousin and just get away from life as I know it.

2. Doesn’t this boozy cake sound absolutely to die for? Some bourbon for me and some for the cake..

3. My many, many visits to Portland over the years have definitely made me want to move there. These tips will serve me well, should I decide to take the plunge.

4. Attention maple syrup users/guzzlers: we now have an answer!

5. I’m no stranger to staying in hostels and Tokyo has been on my list of places to visit. Coincidence coming across this list? I think not.

Heading Down to Forked Deer

There’s something very nostalgic to me about traveling. Stress-inducing, too. What to pack? But I mostly feel nostalgia. One of my first trips ever was back to Tennessee, where my dad’s family has lived for many generations. I was an infant, and if the stories are true, I showed my mom my appreciation for paying for my trip by barfing all over her. Right before she met my great-grandmother (her grandma-in-law), you know, the one who makes the famous coconut cake. You’re welcome, mom.

Growing up, I headed back out to my grandparent’s property every other year, or so. Forked Deer, as we called the property near Gates, TN, is pronounced “Forka-deer” with a Southern accent. Interesting fact: I didn’t learn that it was spelled Forked Deer– as it’s named after the Forked Deer River– until I was like, 15 and saw a street sign. Mind. Blown.

Just last week, I flew out to Memphis and drove the hour or over to Forked Deer. Obviously, we stopped at the first Cracker Barrel we saw. I was seriously bummed that the food wasn’t the same as I’d last had in 2011. My Gramma blames that on Cracker Barrel going national which was news to me. But what can you do?

Anyway, I wanted to share one of my favorite places to get away to. I hope you enjoy the photos of my travel as much as I enjoyed my trip! Read the rest of this entry
