It’s no secret that I love Thai food. A while back I wrote about how I fell in love with Thai food at a restaurant in Napa. And yes, to this day, the owner of Mini Mango Thai Bistro recognizes me and knows my order, down to substitutions. While in Chicago last month, my co-traveler Mel and I stumbled upon a great Thai restaurant. Out of all of the restaurants I tried in the Midwest, Pot Pan Thai was my absolute favorite.

Just in case you find yourself in the Wicker Park area of Chicago wondering where to eat or drink, I did some exploring for you. Totally for you. Never would I dream of going out to eat and drink solely for.. ah, who am I kidding. We all know I love food, beer, wine, and the occasional French 75 or Dirty Martini. Here are five of my favorite Wicker Park eateries that also focus on some drinkery.
Since all of my Chicago efforts were based around what to pack, I left the “where to stay?” question up to Mel. I’ve mentioned before that she’s a seasoned traveler and having traveled with her before, I trust her judgement especially when it comes to accommodations. She told me she had researched a few hostels in the various neighborhoods of Chicago and ended up booking us each a bed in a girls’ dorm at Urban Holiday Lofts, located in the Wicker Park area.
What do you pack when you’re spending a week in a city you’ve never been to (airport layovers don’t count) and you don’t really have an itinerary? And it’s supposed to be hot and muggy? And it’s Chicago? Oh, and you only travel with carry-ons?
Not a whole lot, as it turns out. Growing up “that girl” who brought full liter-sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner for a long weekend and enough outfit changes to be eligible to host a televised awards show, it’s been a difficult process for me to learn how I pack lightly. I’ve been lucky enough to have traveled quite a bit in my twenty-something years, and with those experiences, and the ridiculous overhead luggage bin allowances, I’ve learned to rein in my “need” for frivolous outfits and toiletries.
Sorry I didn’t post this last week; I was a busy lady! Not only was it the 4th of July, but Charise got married and I was the maid of honor! So up to Chico I went to help her with whatever last minute details she needed help with.
But back to something that you
should might find exciting. I was finally craftier than usual: I made a present for Mel! She is moving from down undahh to the land of stars, stripes, and bald eagles this week and I wanted to bring her something to decorate her new house with. I’ll be bringing it to her when I visit and help her get acquainted with the greater Chicago area.
