Getting Ready for a Caribbean Getaway

Guys. July has flown by! I’m still wrapping my brain around the fact I leave for the Caribbean in less than a week.

My pre-travel to-do list is still being chipped away at, but most of the important tasks have been completed. Updated passport for my stint in the British Virgin Islands? Check. Eye mask, neck pillow and ZzzQuil (love it so far!) for sleeping on my red-eye flight? Check. All of the mosquito repelling things to keep me Zika virus-free? Check. Discovering a schedule of happy hours for two of my destinations? Check. (See here and here.) Bring on the Painkillers! The cocktail, no pills!

Really hoping this ZzzQuil helps me sleep on my flight!

But the biggest thing on my to-do list is to pack! As my trip gets closer, the pile of clothes to pack continues to grow. This is not a great thing considering I’m going to have to cut out many cute summer dresses in the name of packing in a carry-on for my trip! Luckily, my destination boasts a very even-keeled climate, where the average high during my stay will be 85 F practically all the time.

Getting Ready for Christmas in Charlottesville

Can you believe Christmas is in exactly one week? Where did time go? I just barely finished my Christmas shopping, which is pretty much a miracle it happened this far in advance. Little by little, I’m starting to get in the Christmas spirit.

Just last week I shared with you that I’d be heading across the country for Christmas. I’m starting to think all of my Christmases will be spent traveling far from home, as last year I ventured to New York and London before settling down in Paris for Christmas. Ooh, next year in somewhere tropical is sounding pretty delicious right now..

Meet Tony Danza, our really sad Christmas tree.

But, this year will be spent in Charlottesville, VA where the average high during my stay will be a chilly and rainy 46 F. Not quite tropical, but I’m still very excited! I’ve never been to Charlottesville, but from everything Chef tells me, I think I’ll love it. And after looking at the Visit Charlottesville site, I’m pretty happy to see they share my priorities (see their whole page dedicated to Vineyards, Breweries and Cideries in the area)! I think we’ll get along just fine, Charlottesville.

What to Pack: Versatile Travel Items

Packing for 3 weeks in a carry-on means bringing along multi-purpose items. Especially since I’m traveling during the winter season, meaning my clothes will be puffier and I’ll have less room for everything. Read on for some of the awesome items I’ll be packing for my trip.  Read the rest of this entry

Packing for the Unknown: Coachella

Yikes! Guys, tonight, I’m heading to SoCal for a little music and arts festival you may have heard of.. Coachella. Tonight. The planner in me is freaking. the. eff. out. I’ve never been! Did I pack enough? Are baby wipes really necessary? To mini backpack or to cross body bag? Ahhh so many decisions!

Receiving my tickets in the mail totally made my day!

I think that’s the scariest part of going somewhere new. I mean, yes, we’ve all read stories and seen pictures that attest to Coachella’s crazy, fabulous, innovative, and other awesome adjectives -ness. But, until one actually experiences it (or anywhere totally new), how the heck does one know what to prepare for?! How many clothes are too many? I revisit my earlier mini backpack vs. cross body bag question. And I’m bringing both, dammit.

Okay, I’ll take a breather from my massive mild panic attack– I mean, I did it for Chicago, I’m pretty sure I can handle Coachella. Right? Read the rest of this entry

Packing for the Unknown: Chicago

What do you pack when you’re spending a week in a city you’ve never been to (airport layovers don’t count) and you don’t really have an itinerary? And it’s supposed to be hot and muggy? And it’s Chicago? Oh, and you only travel with carry-ons?

Not a whole lot, as it turns out. Growing up “that girl” who brought full liter-sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner for a long weekend and enough outfit changes to be eligible to host a televised awards show, it’s been a difficult process for me to learn how I pack lightly. I’ve been lucky enough to have traveled quite a bit in my twenty-something years, and with those experiences, and the ridiculous overhead luggage bin allowances, I’ve learned to rein in my “need” for frivolous outfits and toiletries.
